SOMS Part II

SOMS Revealed

SOULS REVEALED: A Souls of My Sisters Book of Revelations and Tools for Healing Your Life, Soul, and Spirit was released this month. In addition to SOULS OF MY SISTERS being featured in a Black History month pull out section in February's Essence Magazine, signing events have already taken place in cities like Detroit and New York. According to Dawn Daniels and Candace Sandy, the editors and masterminds behind the SOMS movement, "Barnes and Noble recently stated that they never experienced a signing like ours in NY. The events so far have been overwhelmingly successful, attracting women of all ethnic backgrounds."

I'm so honored to have my essay Young, Gifted and Dying included in the Amazing Grace section of this wonderful book. For those that haven't heard me talk about it or haven't seen what I've written about it, SOMS will help pave the way for empowering women of color of all ages and walks of life with its inspiring true stories. With the help of celebrities like Mary J. Blige, Patti Labelle and actress/First Lady of Turks and Caicos, LisaRaye, SOMS returns with a revised and updated edition with 75 first person stories about the challenges some women have overcome and the issues that still linger, lessons learned and wisdom gained by black women across America.

Note from a contributor...

I hope this reaches everyone in good health and blessed spirits! I have great news for everyone. The new book, SOULS REVEALED, has been released! It is available at Barnes and Noble, Books-a-Million as well as several other outlets. I've had the opportunity to read it and it is wonderful! If you look on page 11, you may see a familiar name.

Yep! That would be me. I am very excited that I was provided with the opportunity to share, even just a small piece of my story. I was ashamed for many years about the low times in my life because I thought it would make me less of a person. I thought I would be ridiculed particularly by my classmates. My mom told me many times, that when you go through something in life, it is your responsibility to share that information with others so that they can learn from your mistakes. I thought she was crazy to put her business out there for all to hear. I didn't understand until the last few years how what she was doing was part of being a Christian and offering a testimony.

She taught me that the hard times are only bad when you let them take over your life. They are even worse when you don't give someone the opportunity to learn from your mistakes. You have gained nothing. At this point in my life, I am very glad that I went through the trials and tribulations that I did because I have a greater appreciation for what life has to offer. It's funny because when people read the story they are in disbelief about things I had gone through. I'm thinking to myself, "If you think that was something, wait until you hear the things I DIDN'T write down." The person I am today has far surpassed what many people expected of a black, teenage parent and I am extremely proud of that. I'm also grateful that I am able to share things with people things that can perhaps help influence their life for the better.

Rose -- with your background in social work, I know you will find that book useful. I can see you having your clients doing exercises from the book already! :-}

Sheila -- it's well worth the read! And having a Souls of My Sisters Pamper Your Soul Day with your girlfriends/book club talking about the book, getting facials/manicures, etc is so much fun! I know, I've done plenty of them! Hee...
